Pocket parks in the Brussels Canal Zone!

Johan Leman, 20 May 2022

“Brussels struggles with the heat. It can be three degrees hotter on average in the metropolis than in the countryside. But it is the people in Brussels with the lowest incomes in the most densely built-up neighbourhoods who feel that heat stress the most. We are heading for a crisis situation. We need to bring in water and greenery in the short term.'” (Bruzz, 26.06.2019).

According to Bruzz (26.6.2019), the heat difference at night can sometimes reach 10 degrees between the heat slot (see map) and the edge.

3 years later: The overheating in Brussels is at times a permanent feature. Every year it happens again. It is waiting for a water bomb to fall on a part of Brussels.

Here are the facts: three degrees of heat difference between Brussels and the countryside, and within Brussels more than five degrees of heat difference between the Canal Zone and the richer municipalities.

Actually, one knows what has to be done: stop building on and concreting in the Canal Zone and replace the plans that go in that direction with plans for pocket parks with tall trees, with grass and no hard landscaping. You can’t make up for something like that by planting high residential towers to which you then attach a few bushes per floor on the outside.

Green, tall trees, grass and clean water… this is what can prevent disasters in the Brussels canal zone in the long run.

No investment towers!

Stop thus that insanity. This is not a discussion about the value or otherwise of high towers, but about the places in Brussels where you stop building and concreting, surely when it concerns an  investment tower.
