Book launch: Couscouseries, a migration history of couscous

2 December 2023 @ 15 h 00 min - 16 h 00 min

The MMM museum invites you to the launch of Lucas Catherine’s new book: Couscouseries, Histoire migratoire du Couscous.

🏠 Location: Rue des Ateliers, 17 Molenbeek
📅 Date: Saturday 4 November (presentation in Dutch) (or) Saturday 2 December (presentation in French)
⏲️ Time: 3pm

Summary:

Migrants bring more than just their labour force with them; they also bring their culinary culture. People from the Maghreb have enriched our gastronomy with their couscous. The fascinating story of couscous is that of its migration with the Berbers from North Africa to Black West Africa, Andalusia, Sardinia, Sicily and even as far as Palestine.
But that’s not all. Where can we trace the history of the first Brussels restaurant to serve this emblematic dish? What are the ingredients in this delicious recipe? The very first Arabic recipe manual dates back to the 13th century, and a 15th-century citizen of Bruges explains why we couldn’t prepare it. How can we enjoy this dish while respecting the rules of etiquette? Manuals were written for this purpose. And what to drink with it, when coffee only became popular in the 16th century and tea only conquered our palates in the 19th century?

Come and discover this fabulous book illustrating the history of a traditional dish that has travelled from Africa to Europe.

➡️ The book will be available at the museum from 21 October at a price of 8 euros.
