11 April 2025
Until Wednesday 30 April, you can visit the photo exhibition ‘Children in War Zones’ at the MigratieMuseumMigration. As part of the expo, the Museum invites you to a conference of Shadi Saleh on Palestine, where personal narrative meets collective history.
This expo offers a poignant perspective on the daily lives of children in war zones, such as Gaza, Syria and Ukraine. Through the lens of photographers from different backgrounds, the public is invited to see war through the eyes of children.
Dr. Shadi Saleh, a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip, will share his personal story — one of growing up in a conflict area and facing exile. Shadi grows up in the Jabalia refugee camp, the largest in the region, and attends one of the many UN schools there. He obtains his master’s degree in architecture in the United States after which he comes to Belgium, for a PhD on urban layout at KU Leuven. With his knowledge, he moves back to his home country. There, he works for Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency, which aims to support Palestine in going through the green transition. After the outbreak of war, he is forced to flee back to Belgium.

His talk will explore the evolving political and social landscape of Palestine, life in Gaza – with a focus on children and families and the role of memory, identity, and storytelling. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Interpretation can be arranged if needed because the conference will be held in English.
