SUMMARY:Exhibition: Identity On The Line
DESCRIPTION:Many migration movements demand a lot from migrants. Their lives and health are threatened\, their right to self-determination is challenged\, and their individual identities become objects of other people’s prejudices and actions. \nAll migration processes\, even the painful ones\, lead to new cultural diversity\, which can be seen as a positive force in today’s societies. Shared experiences empower the citizens of Europe and help create our joint European identity. \nMigratieMueseumMigration is hosting an exhibition documenting some European cases: \n1. The long-term consequences of the German occupation of Norway during World War II. \n2. Prejudices against many Greenlandians after the migration from Greenland to Denmark since 1945. \n3. Forced migration of Sámi from the North to the South of Sweden. \n4. Population exchange in former German Pomerania after 1945\, exemplified by the Polish town Slupsk . \n5. The long-term consequences of the Holocaust for Lithuanian women. \n6. Migration to Slovenia after World War II and the impact of the country’s independence in 1991 on the migrants. \n7. The complex political history of the Istrian peninsula and its multi-ethnic population related to 200 000 emigrants after World War II. \nThe exhibition opens on 8 May at 11 am \nReservations: museum@foyer.be

SUMMARY:Book launch: Couscouseries\, a migration history of couscous
DESCRIPTION:The MMM museum invites you to the launch of Lucas Catherine’s new book: Couscouseries\, Histoire migratoire du Couscous. \n🏠 Location: Rue des Ateliers\, 17 Molenbeek\n📅 Date: Saturday 4 November (presentation in Dutch) (or) Saturday 2 December (presentation in French)\n⏲️ Time: 3pm \nSummary: \nMigrants bring more than just their labour force with them; they also bring their culinary culture. People from the Maghreb have enriched our gastronomy with their couscous. The fascinating story of couscous is that of its migration with the Berbers from North Africa to Black West Africa\, Andalusia\, Sardinia\, Sicily and even as far as Palestine.\nBut that’s not all. Where can we trace the history of the first Brussels restaurant to serve this emblematic dish? What are the ingredients in this delicious recipe? The very first Arabic recipe manual dates back to the 13th century\, and a 15th-century citizen of Bruges explains why we couldn’t prepare it. How can we enjoy this dish while respecting the rules of etiquette? Manuals were written for this purpose. And what to drink with it\, when coffee only became popular in the 16th century and tea only conquered our palates in the 19th century? \nCome and discover this fabulous book illustrating the history of a traditional dish that has travelled from Africa to Europe. \n➡️ The book will be available at the museum from 21 October at a price of 8 euros. \nBook launch reservations: museum@foyer.be

SUMMARY:Exhibition: 'Being Human' at MMM
DESCRIPTION:From November 22\, 2023\, to February 15\, 2024\, the Brussels Migration Museum hosts “Being Human – The sea at night is too big\,” an exhibition by artist Gonzalo Orquín. This event is part of the Spanish presidency of the European Union\, commissioned by the Spanish embassy in Belgium. \nThe exhibition\, conceived by Francesca Paci and inspired by Spanish portraiture\, sheds light on the stories and experiences of migrants\, focusing on arrivals by sea in Lampedusa\, Italy\, and via Bihac\, Bosnia. Orquín’s portraits aim to give a voice to these often overlooked individuals\, fostering empathy and understanding. \nThe 16 works on display humanize migrants\, offering names\, faces\, and stories\, portraying their experiences with both stark realism and moments of hope. The exhibition also addresses the challenges faced by LGBTQI+ refugees.

SUMMARY:Exhibition at MMM: 'Dessine-moi un migrant'
DESCRIPTION:What is a migrant? What do you imagine when you hear this word? \nThe non-profit organization Service Social des Étrangers has launched a participatory project aimed at challenging the stereotypes associated with migrants. \nEvery year\, thousands of people move from one country to another to work\, live\, seek temporary or permanent refuge. These movements can lead to cultural\, linguistic\, religious differences for those who migrate. It is a challenging journey that is also tarnished by the numerous stereotypes attached to migrants. \nThis exhibition\, in the form of an interactive workshop\, aims to open a dialogue and reflect on what a migrant is. Everyone can participate and together create different representations. \nReservations :\n+32 2 609 55 61 museum@foyer.be

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Notre Congo/Onze Kongo"
DESCRIPTION:The MigratieMuseumMigration will host from 18 April to 31 May 2023 an exhibition in collaboration with CEC-ONG “Notre Congo/Onze Kongo”. This exhibition focuses on the Belgian colonial propaganda. Through iconographic documents and videos from the colonial period\, the exhibition aims to understand how the different propaganda channels justified colonisation to the general public. The dissemination of images and slogans contributed to the shaping of a collective imagination still very present in our societies through monumental vestiges and stereotypes about the Congolese community and more broadly about Afro-descendants. This exhibition also aims to initiate a reflection on these representations. \nWe invite school groups to visit this exhibition as part of their history\, geography\, social science and language courses. Workshops and presentations will be held throughout the exhibition to allow for discussion with pupils and students. \nSelf-guided tours (without a guide) cost 5 euros per student. \nWorkshops cost 8 euros per participant. \nReservations: \n+32 2 609 55 61 museum@foyer.be

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ecuatorianismos en Bélgica: 3 miradas
DESCRIPTION:With the exhibition “Ecuatorianismos en Bélgica”\, the artists want to tell us how their vision merges with their own migration story. All three live in Brussels and\, although they use different forms and techniques (painting\, engraving and performance)\, there is unity through the inspiration of “Ecuatorianismos”. \nThree Ecuadorian artistic eyes: Alejandra Bedón\, Marco Campaña Salgado and Diana Valarezo. Alejandra Bedón presents a series of engravings with a new perspective on botanical art. We feel the fascination for the germ of life in her rhythmic and harmonious compositions. Marco Campaña Salgado brings us vivid colours\, his paintings reflecting a magical fusion between the ancient and the contemporary and holding up a mirror to us. And Diana Valarezo on this occasion presents the performance “Rasgar las vestiduras”\, in which she uses embroidery to tell the universal story of migration. \nThis exhibition is a collaboration withEmbajada de España en BélgicaMisión del Ecuador ante la Unión Europea \nReservations:+32 2 609 55 61 museum@foyer.be
