We are turning our education system into a disaster zone…

Johan Leman, 18 September 2024

To be clear: I understand very well that a school administration may choose to offer four days of classes instead of five due to a shortage of teachers. I also understand that schools structure their schedules so that Wednesdays can be outsourced to animators or sometimes even volunteer parents, who keep the children at school or take them for walks on the street. If I am critical of this, my criticism is absolutely not directed at the school administrations, teachers, or parents. But do the representatives and ministers actually realize what is happening here? Do they understand what this means for the future of our society? Do they really think that systematically cutting a few hours of classes per week, which could normally be dedicated to subjects like mathematics, will have no consequences for the level of future higher education?
