Learning to love cycling while cycling

Brussels Mobility checked the travel habits of Brussels residents.

Some findings for the period 2010 – 2022:

Walking is the most used mode of transport and is increasing: from 32% to 36%

Car use decreases from 38% to 27%. Fewer households appear to have a car in Brussels than in the rest of the country.

Very positively, the use of bicycles increased from 3% to 9%.

Less positive is that the use of public transport (bus, tram and metro) fell from 24% to 22% between 2010 and today.

The evolution by bicycle is particularly positive.

Experience at Foyer tells us that by cycling, young people love it while cycling.

An example: last year, 14 young people decided to cycle to Morocco… It was seen by those involved and those around them as something almost impossible. And afterwards they also had to recover from the effort for a while. But this year again 10 young people decide to go to Morocco by bike: 5 of last year’s cyclists, and 5 new ones…

While cycling, you love cycling.

Perhaps a lesson for the schools? Just as a Pedibus has been set in motion in some places, perhaps the Cyclobus could also be promoted more and more as a class trekking somewhere in Brussels during school hours?
